GETTING TO KNOW ME
Thanks to the family in which I was born, to the place where I was brought into the world, to all the special people I have met and the experiences I have had during my life, I have become the person who I am now. I am especially grateful to my burnout and a few other events that occurred in my life, which we normally consider as being extremely unpleasant. They forced me to look at myself and the world around me in a different way. I know I needed these events to wake up and become more aware of life itself. They have enriched my life immensely.
My name is Titia Ho-Kang-Jou (1949). I was born in Aruba to Surinamese parents, a Creole mother and a Chinese father. At fifteen I went to Holland; at first I studied Psychology and after two years I switched to Mathematics. For many years I have been a teacher in a secondary school and adult education, as a teacher of Mathematics and a mentor/coach/tutor.
‘Born on Aruba, from Surinamese parents and living in the Netherlands sometimes created a lot of confusion. I often wondered: what do people want from me? What do they expect? I was always afraid to do the wrong thing. Their opinion was important to me’
‘I never asked myself: ‘Hey Titia, what do you want for yourself?’That just never occurred to me. One way or the other, it was easier to do what was expected and blame others if it went wrong, than taking responsibility for situations in which I ended up.’
Although the facade did look good, I was not always pleased with the life I was living. Because of my burnout and other complicated experiences I gradually realized that I was attracting misery. These two sentences which I ran into one day confirmed that:
If you always do what you always did
You will always get what you always got
It was a bombshell. It was time to find out what it was I was exactly doing. I decided to go and find out what I really wanted.
The NLP and the Enneagram answered many of my questions. They changed my life completely.
The main discovery has been that first and foremost I myself am responsible for my own life. Whatever happens, it is up to me how to react to any situation. I can be sad, assertive or run away. I can feel victimized or I can find ways to deal with the situation at hand.
The heart of the matter is how I choose to deal with situations.
People have a habit to avoid unpleasantness. Of course! But if we keep ourselves close at heart and carry on with our life we will notice that unpleasantness will fade. These situations can even teach us something as well. If we run away today, we will be confronted with the same tomorrow.
Consequently I have learned to say ‘yes’ to the things that cross my way. This is not always easy, but I do know that willingness to meet problems head on, makes life more interesting and provides solutions for sticky situations that we find ourselves in.
I have found out that we do not have to improve on life. Life is perfect the way it is. We will discover its beauty by opening ourselves up to it.
My motto: 'If you concentrate on what you like to do, you’ll become strong and happy inside'.
Or according to Krishnamurti: ‘To be able to do what you love to do is the first step on the road to freedom’
All these experiences have enriched my life so much that I would like to share them with other people. That was the reason behind my Enneagram and NLP education. The great teachers in this fields are Anné Linden, Russ Hudson and Don Riso, Eckhart Tolle, Stephen Covey and Byron Katie.
I still attend training sessions with Anné Linden and the Enneagram teachers Riso and Hudson in New York.
Their lessons in life inspire me in my coaching and training workshops and in the safe environment of Ho’s Cottage.
